The way trees talk
I have been known to say that I talk to trees. They are often my favourite beings to confide in. I have one tree at my childhood home I speak with, I have a tree on a look outs edge that I got on with immediately and many trees I’ve met on forest walks. I would love to speak to them more but unfortunately friendships with trees are unlike friendship with mobile beings. You have to go to them or there’s no hanging out.
You can’t text them or call either. In fact, you can’t even write them an old fashioned letter. It is right back to the basics when you’re friends with a tree. That being said, a tree friend kind of feels like a spirit animal. Even when you’re not by their side, even though you can’t text them, they are something you are connected with. You feel the trees energy, you feel their guidance and their intention.
It is like having a magical friend from another world. The natural world.
How do I talk to trees? I am often asked (especially by clients who get this as homework after a session where it becomes clear to me that they need a tree friend). To answer that I say, how do you speak to any other friend? You just talk. You share what’s on your mind.
One of the great things about speaking with trees is that they never interrupt. They don’t have any opinion to interject. They don’t have any story they’d rather tell instead of listening to yours. They don’t offer advice that wasn’t asked for and they certainly don’t give poor suggestions.
You speak.
The tree listens.
You feel better and more alive.
Simply because you’re letting it out, journaling out loud so to speak.
Sometimes I swear… the tree moves in the wind, sounds or drops a leaf or twig in the most unbelievable timings.
Almost as if they are in fact listening and responding. Perfectly.
If you want to practice this, speak as if you know for a fact that all living beings can listen (trees have been proven to communicate with each other, to see you, recognise you and even to feel the power of your words) and be open to hearing, feeling or seeing a response.
When I hear the tree speak (which I do sometimes), it sounds like my own inner voice. Or maybe more like the voice of my inner mother. Mother Nature speaking through me. Within me.
She always offers such grounded and wise guidance. I have never been misled.
It may sound strange when I tell you I talk to trees.
But to me it is the most natural thing to do.
‘You don’t speak to trees?” I may ask you.
“That’s so strange”.
Do yourself a favour, go make friends with a tree.
