Why you won’t see me being authentic

Okay, obviously I am me. I am always me. However, there are many versions of ‘me’.

I have the ‘me’ that is around family and close friends; loud, crazy high pitched laugh and being a class clown.

I have the ‘me’ who cleans people homes for extra pocket money; respectful, quiet and focused on beating the clock.

I have the ‘me’ who teaches Yoga; calm, steady and a voice of silky honey.

I have the ‘me’ who speaks on I social media; to the point, an educator and a deep desire to help guide the world to peace.

I have the ‘me’ when I am at home; comfortable, tidying boss and cozy is always the vibe.

I have the ‘me’ who I am by myself; conversations with me, listening to books and music I love and reflecting.

I have the ‘me’ who I am when I am doing my personal practice; arriving a different human every day, trying to settle my mind and help my body.

I have many versions of me as we all do.

We call on certain versions of ourselves in the moment it’s appropriate and that is an important thing we do naturally, socially.

It is not a bad thing.

On my Podcast, when I am teaching Yoga and speaking online, you’re not going to get the ‘me’ that I am around family, or the ‘me’ that I am around my partner or even the ‘me’ that I am around myself.

Why?

Because it’s a different relationship.

Different purpose.

Different intention.

If I was to show up on social media and cry to you, it wouldn’t serve you or me.

If I was to tell you everything about my life and all about my latest emotional break down (which was this morning because I bumped my head… does knowing that serve you?), it wouldn’t serve you.

I believe we’ve overdone what it means to be ‘authentic’.

We all have many versions of ourselves and we need to know which one to call on in any given moment.

My partner doesn’t want me speaking to him the way I would to a Yoga class.

You don’t want me speaking to you in the way I would around my siblings.

My cleaning clients don’t want me being the way I am at home.

There’s a moment for all versions of you.

I believe crying, having tantrums or sharing too much about your personal life on social media is poison for you, for the people who witness it and for the close people in your life (especially those involved in the shared situations).

Sharing is okay.

I share many stories from my life.

But I deliver it with grace and intention.

Honestly, I cry most days.

Do I do it on camera?

No.

Why?

Because the moments I am crying are for me and my heart. I honour myself in those moments and listen to my body speak.

Don’t grab the camera in delicate, personal moments just to be ‘authentic’.

It’s your life.

And you’re meant to have precious, tender moments that are only yours.

With love from my heart to all versions of you,

because we are all human
