My dream office

Let’s all just admit it…

Sitting in an office is soul sucking and draining on every level.

SO, I’ve got a wild idea, hear me out.

Instead of a multiple story building with the same old tired layout - an open plan space that has indoor and outdoor options.

Instead of artificial and poisonous LED lighting - use giant beautiful windows and even sky lights to use mostly natural light with the opportunity to use warm and gentle lamp lighting when necessary.

Instead of recycled gross indoor air - we make those windows openable and let fresh air (no matter the temperature) flow through the space.

Instead of eight hours straight inside staring at a screen - we put a maximum of four hours on screens a day and break it up by changing work spaces, going for a walk, eating lunch without screens and doing good old fashioned work on paper, whiteboards, chalkboards and even talking to people.

Instead of unnatural pointy shoes - we encourage no shoes (ideally) or wide toe box shoes that help keep your feet happy and healthy (no heels allowed).

Instead of pencil skirts, collars, ties and button ups - we allow people to wear clothes that allow for easy movement, breathing and comfort.

Instead of five days a week inside working nine to five - we mix it up through the week. Work from home, take a hike and work on a rock in the sun (my personal favourite), sit on the grass outside the building, take time for hobbies and actually enjoy coming into the healthy office space.

The fact that gross office buildings are seen as normal is one of the craziest spells ever cast upon society.

Life is more important than any job behind a screen.

We can live, work and play.

We can be productive, be outside and be happy.

We can mix it up, have a steady routine and do all we want in life.

We have got to stop sitting at dull desks, in front of headache provoking screens, under sharp lighting, dressed in unnatural clothing, drinking cup after cup of coffee and doing work that means nothing to us and ultimately nothing (and absolutely destructive) to the Earth.

There is a way.

There is a way to get all we need to done, without making anyone miserable or breeding stress and sadness into each generation.

I have a dream office.

And she is found under the open sky, next to the birds and by the river.

What’s your dream office?
